You're probably at the end of your rope after reading a bunch of articles and watching the web sites and TV shows on what is good research. If you're ready to make your research more effective, then read on.
One very important thing about research is that it should be accurate. That means making sure that all facts and figures you use are correct. Statistics are the backbone of any good research. Statistics form the basis of every scientific study in existence. They have shown that a study can be statistically significant if, and only if, the results of the study represent a genuine difference between two different variables. Of course, not every study is going to be statistically significant. If you're studying the effects of diet on health, you don't want to be cheating the system by only using studies with two variables. A study with four variables is likely to be highly statistically significant, but it's still much less exciting than a study that has two variables that you think might affect the results, but can't be proven. It's good to have as many options as possible when deciding what to do with your research. That means a diverse selection of subjects, but also a number of methods of data collection. Remember, there are two types of surveys: those that require the surveyor to answer a series of questions online or via telephone, and those that require them to physically visit the home of the respondent. For people who are doing research for an upcoming project, there are more possibilities when deciding how to collect their data. If you're doing a survey on diet and health, then you may prefer to survey participants via internet, phone, mail, and even through video conferencing. If you're doing a study on customer satisfaction, you may want to conduct an offline survey as well. Surveys vary a lot in terms of the type of questions they ask. Some research is survey based, where the subject gets a questionnaire asking about their dietary habits, their health, their thoughts on a variety of topics. Other research is experimental, where the subject has to do a certain task or answer a series of questions. At the end of the study, if the findings are not statistically significant, then a letter grade is given to the study, and the question is left unanswered. Research is important, and for good reason. No matter what kind of research you're doing, be careful that you get all the facts from the sources you've chosen. You should be able to trust what you find, but that doesn't mean you need to believe everything you see.
